10 Ways to Save Money In Your Office

Cutting costs—where you can—is important for every business.

Finding ways to cut those costs is usually trickier than it sounds. Of course, sometimes, cutting costs can sacrifice the quality of your business, which you don’t want to do. In other ways, it can be unclear exactly how to reduce expenses to benefit the bottom line.

Here are some easy ways to save money in your office without sacrificing! Saving energy can save your business more money than you think—and it only takes a few small changes. Let’s explore.

1. Turn Out the Lights

Have you ever walked past an empty conference or break room and saw the lights on? It sounds like a no-brainer, but turning out the lights when they aren’t in use is a huge money saver. If you can, try to show your team members just how much turning off the lights can save them. They’d probably do it at home, so encourage the same mentality in the office.

Of course, it helps if you lead with example; take a second to hit the switch, and remind your employees to do the same (1).

If you’re able, consider lights that use occupancy sensors, which can, in some cases, save a great deal of costs over time. And, if you currently have sensor-activated lights, just be sure they are programmed correctly, otherwise it could cost you more than needed (3).

2. Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

You might already use a recycling bin at your office, but do you make sure to maximize all the paper that you use? Be sure to always use both sides of the paper, and utilize old envelopes/unimportant documents as scrap paper (1).

Just think: long-term studies have shown that companies that promote sustainability also tend to perform better (4).

3. Turn Off the Computers at Night

Even if you’re not using it, computers still use energy when turned on. Be sure to turn off your computer when you leave for the day—and don’t forget to do the same with power strips (1)!

If your workplace has a TV that runs, also be sure to turn that off. You’d be surprised how many organizations will neglect to do so.

You can also take a look at some of the other common culprits that can result in higher than necessary energy costs:

  • Digital clocks left on. See if you have the ability to use timers.
  • Almost anything with an LED display. Many businesses today keep these on for security, but depending on your office, it may be something you can turn off.
  • Coffee makers or other appliances employees use.
  • Printers.

4. Opt for Green Office Supplies

There’s an abundance of environmental-friendly office supplies on the market—check them out! Major retailers such as Office Max and Staples dedicate entire areas to green supplies, too (1).

Examples of green office supplies can include:

  • Recycled folders.
  • Paper towels and/or toilet paper.
  • Folding tables.
  • Cups. When possible, encourage people to bring their own mug or cup that can be re-used. Or, make the investment to supply employees with their own re-usable, washable mug! It’ll save in the long-run.
  • Napkins.

5. Switch Your Light Bulbs to CFLs

If you’re still using traditional light bulbs, consider making the switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. In addition to lasting ten times longer than normal bulbs, they also can save you up to 75% more energy! (1) Cha-ching.

To get the most from your CFLs, be sure to check with the manufacturer for compatibility first. Then, screw it in right when you first install it. Next, aim to keep them on for 15 minutes or more at a time—rather than switching them off and on which reducing the effectiveness (5).

6. Repaint Your Office a Lighter Shade

This one might surprise you. Did you know that darker walls require more energy to produce the same amount of light? If you get the chance to repaint, opt for a lighter shade and save some energy (2).

7. Make the Switch to Laptops

If your company hasn’t done so already, switch from PCs to laptops. Portable computers require 90% less power than desktop computers. If it fits how your people work, then consider making the switch over time (2).

8. Watch Your Thermostat

In the winter, bump your thermostat a few degrees lower and do the opposite during the warmer months. Make sure that you and your employees are still comfortable, of course, however a few degrees won’t feel too different (2).

It goes without saying to use the programmable thermostat settings to lower the temperature when employees aren’t at the office, including weekends or other “off days”.

9. Buy Energy Star Equipment

Energy efficient equipment (although an investment) is a great way to cut down on costs in the long run. Look for the Energy Star logo (a program that rates appliances based on their efficiency) and enjoy some serious savings! (1)

10. Have Desk Areas Near the Windows

Let natural light work its magic. Not only is sitting by a window more pleasant, but it also saves on costs since you won’t have the need for a light as frequently (1).
